NPTS Stages 1-7
Children progress through the FUNdamental movement skills for
swimming: Buoyancy and Balance, Rotation and Orientation,
Streamlining, Aquatic Breathing, Travel and Co-ordination, Water
Safety, Health and Fitness, within NPTS stages 1-7. These
skills are like a jigsaw; when all the pieces come together, a
competent, confident, safe swimmer emerges who has the skills to
develop the techniques required by any of the five aquatic
disciplines - diving, lifesaving, swimming, synchronised swimming,
or water polo.
Lessons are taught using a wide array of fun and game type
activities, delivery through this method enables children to use
and combine new skills in an enjoyable environment, resulting;
ultimately in a faster rate of learning.
Pupils are continually assessed throughout the course of lessons
and must pass all outcomes from the stage before they are able to
progress onto the next stage - this is important; if a swimmer has
been unable to master one of the skills they will no longer learn
effectively, which can lead to a loss of confidence and
motivation.
Swimmers are continually assessed throughout the term and will
receive an end of term report recognising their effort throughout
the term and indicating whether they are eligible for a badge or
other reward.
