About the centre
Where is South Wansdyke? The answer is that it does not exist and never really did. But in 1980 Wansdyke District Council built a swimming pool and squash courts in the south of the district and named it South Wansdyke Sports Centre. The name has never really caught on though and the centre is known locally as Midsomer Norton Sports Centre - not surprisingly - it is in the middle of Midsomer Norton!
The first stage of the development was opened by Brian Rose, member of the England cricket team and captain of Somerset cricket club. Work continued and in 1984 a second section of the building opened introducing a fitness gym and multi-purpose sports hall. This was opened by Wansdyke district council councillor John Neville-Dove.
In 1994, Wansdyke Council itself ceased to exist as an entity but the centre has gone from strength to strength.
The centre is a great community facility with a range of indoor and outdoor sports activities. Recent additions have included a steam suite and a soft play area for children.
In recent years there has been a big expansion in the number and range of exercise classes on offer with over 30 every week including ‘spinning’.
The centre benefits from free parking facilities which are available throughout the day. There are also supervised play sessions so your child can be looked after while you can relax or have a workout.
