Sobell closure dates

Islington Council is investing in the future of the Sobell Leisure Centre by carrying out essential repairs and upgrades costing £1.7m. This will lead to closures of facilities and activities through to September 2010. Check the improvement works timetable and centre access before you visit.

Pay and play badminton

We have up to twelve courts available for ‘pay and play’. More competitive players may wish to join the badminton club. We also have courses for both beginners and improvers and run a badminton clinic.

Programme

Pay and play booking slots are 55 minutes, starting on the half hour on Sundays to Fridays and on the hour on Saturdays.

Bookings

Courts can be booked 7 days in advance of play by members and 5 days in advance by non members. Visit in person, call reception from 8am or

Prices

A 55 minute court booking for adults costs £12 or £9.40 for members. Off peak bookings (term time weekdays up to 3.30pm) cost £7.50 or £6.40 for members.

Badminton Sessions

Sessions will be run by qualified coaches of the Badminton England Association. Whilst training and coaching are an integral part of the session, we are happy for players to turn up and play games only. Choice of session partners is at the discretion of the coach. Rackets are not provided.

Category of playing level

Beginners – must have some basic skills and knowledge of the game
Improvers – players who have played badminton for more than 3 years
Intermediate – players with good racket skills and tactical knowledge

Fridays

7.30 – 10.30pm Improver / intermediate adult players and advanced juniors (15yrs +) players only. Session is in a games format. No coaching provided.

Sundays

4 – 6.30pm Beginners and improver players. Session is in a games format. No coaching provided.

4.30 – 6.30pm Juniors only - all ages and abilities. Session is in a games format and is coached.

Sobell Badminton Club

For those players who are looking for more of a challenge and are interested in playing in league matches or to that standard, please contact Tariq Shamsudeen on 07768 748942 or visit the Sobell Badminton Club website. The Sobell Badminton Club play every Tuesday from 7.30 - 10.30pm and Sunday from 6.30 - 9.30pm. Guests are welcome to pop down.

Prices

A club session for adults costs £6.40 or £5.30 for members. A club session for juniors costs £4.50 or £3.50 for members and £2.40 member concessions.

Saturday Badminton Clinic

Coached sessions with organised games. There is no need to book, just turn up and play. Equipment will be provided or you may bring your own. Players of all abilities are welcome.

Adult sessions costs £6.40 or £5.30 for members. Junior sessions costs £4.50 or £3.50 for members and £2.40 member concessions.

Badminton Courses

We offer five week courses for adult beginners and improvers. Each course has a maximum of six people. The course content includes laws of the game, serves, strokes, tactics and defence. Equipment is not provided so please bring your own or hire some.

Beginners courses run from 7.30 - 8.30pm and improvers courses run from 8.30 - 9.30pm.

Prices

A course of five lessons for adults is £42 or £39 for members. Note that refunds will not be given for cancellations or non attendance.

Equipment

Badminton rackets cost £1.50 to hire. A £5 deposit is required from non members, members can leave their membership card. Various equipment can be purchased at Reception.
