Sobell Leisure Centre to celebrate 40th Birthday with open day

Happy, smiley family huddled together

40th birthday celebrations continue for Islington’s iconic Sobell Leisure Centre, which will throw open its doors for a free* family fun day, Sunday 24 November 2013.

Damien Swan, General Manager at Sobell Leisure Centre which is managed by Aquaterra in partnership with Islington Council states:

We want the whole community to enjoy what Sobell has to offer to help celebrate our 40th birthday. The centre’s great strength is that we have a wide range of clubs and services for all ages, abilities and backgrounds so the open day is an excellent opportunity for people to try out some of our most popular sports and activities for free.

There’ll be something for everyone including basketball, gentle zumba, netball, table tennis, boccia, ice skating, slack lining, judo, roller skating and more. Visitors to the Sobell open day will also be able to watch demonstration matches and sports.

Islington Council and sports partners have recently invested £1.4m to upgrade facilities including new outdoor pitches which opened to the public in September 2013.

Cllr Janet Burgess, Islington Council’s executive member for health and wellbeing said:

The Sobell belongs to Islington and is a great asset to the community with some fantastic sports enjoyed.

Three years ago we saved the centre from plans to demolish one of the borough’s best-loved leisure venues and invested in upgrading the facilities so we can look forward to it being enjoyed for many years to come.

Opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1973, the Sobell Leisure Centre was a gift to Islington’s residents from Sir Michael Sobell, a wealthy philanthropist. Since its launch the centre has become a much loved facility and a hub for sporting development including being an official training facility for volleyball during the London Olympics in 2012.

The Sobell Leisure Centre is a leader in programming for young people, establishing the popular Saturday Night Project to create more activities for 13-19 year-olds in Islington at the weekends.

For a full listing of activities and taster sessions taking place on the day see our open day timetable.
