About the centre
The Islington Tennis Centre was opened in 1989 with three indoor
and three outdoor courts as part of the Lawn Tennis Association's
Indoor Tennis Initiative. This programme set out to build indoor
tennis courts up and down the country that were open to the public
on a "Pay & Play" basis. It soon became apparent that the
indoor courts were a great success, attracting players of a variety
of standards and from a wide range of backgrounds.
Following a successful lottery bid in 1999, the new Islington
Tennis Centre reopened in April 2000. Now with six indoor courts
and two outdoor courts the quality and quantity of tennis provision
in Islington has improved immensely. In addition to tennis
facilities, the development included a 50 station gym, an aerobics
studio and a sauna and steam suite.
The tennis initiative has shown success with Anna Keothavong,
who started playing tennis here in 1989, now ranked number 1 in the
UK and 96 in the world!
The Islington Tennis Centre now manages all football bookings at
Market Road, Whittington Park and Rosemary Gardens.
The centre was built on the site of the old Caledonian Cattle
Market. Nearby is the Grade II listed Clock Tower built in
1855.
The Islington Tennis Centre is a member of the UK Fitness
Network.
