Inaugural London Badminton Bonanza a Smash Hit at Sobell
Over 350 keen badminton players served their best shots on
Saturday 9 July at the first-ever London Badminton Bonanza, a large
scale public badminton event at Sobell Leisure Centre.
Twenty-five adult Islington players were joined on court by
fellow badminton fanatics from all over the UK, ranging from
beginners and casual players to low to mid level league players.
Players competed in matches grouped by ability and age (16+, Over
40s).
The Bonanza - run in association with partner Yehlex UK and new
social initiative, No Strings Badminton - is just one of a number
of local community events organized by BADMINTON England as part of
the 'London Legacy Plan' supporting the YONEX BWF World Badminton
Championships to be held at Wembley Arena, 8-14 August 2011.
The legacy plan encourages people of all ages and ability from
across all London boroughs to play and enjoy badminton as a
sociable activity.
Damien Swan, Manager of Sobell Leisure Centre said
"Aquaterra Leisure and Islington Council have encouraged a
strong badminton base at Sobell over the years with clubs, clinics
and pay & play sessions, so it was an honour for us to host a
UK-wide event and tremendously enjoyable for our participants."
