About Swim4life

Swim4life is a two year pilot scheme that provides free swimming for people over 60. The initiative is being jointly funded by Islington Council, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department of Health and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Can I swim for free at any time?

Yes. If you are 60 years old or over, you can swim for free during any casual or lane swimming session. You will have to refer to your local pool’s programme. You will still have to pay if you want to take part in instructed sessions like Cally Masters, Liquid Swim or swimming lessons.

Islington Council has, since 2002, offered free memberships and free off peak swimming to people over 60. This extends that offer.

Can I just turn up at a swimming pool and get in free?

Yes, but on your first visit you will have to bring proof of age and address, fill in a form and get issued with a membership card. If you are already a holder of a 60+ Izz Card, then just bring this on every visit.

Will I have to pay for the membership card?

No, but if you lose this card and have to take out another one the replacement charge will be £3.

Will the card give me any other benefits?

Yes, the card will also give you:

  • free aqua aerobics
  • a free gym introduction session (if you want to use the gyms)
  • exercise classes, gym and sauna for only £1.60 per visit
  • priority booking privileges and discounts on tennis, badminton and other
       sports

Will I need to get a ticket?

It is essential that everyone uses their card and collects a ticket on every single visit. This will enable us to evaluate the scheme.

We may also ask you to volunteer to take part in a survey from time to time.

Do I have to be a resident of Islington?

No. Anyone aged 60 and over can take part.

Can I also swim free in other parts of the country?

Around 80% of councils in England and Wales are taking part. Our neighbouring boroughs of Camden, City of London, Hackney and Haringey are all taking part. You will also be able to swim for free in their council pools. However, there will be local arrangements about proof of identity and membership cards. You will have to contact these councils’ swimming pools directly if you want to find out more. A membership card issued by another borough will not be recognised in Islington.

Health and safety

What if I can’t swim?

It is never too late to learn! Swimming is fantastically good for you and is great fun at any age. Aquaterra run lessons for people who are completely new to swimming or just need a refresher.  We can also help people who are nervous of water (or leisure centres!). Contact your local swimming pool for details.

Is there any medical advice about taking up swimming?

Swimming is a great activity for people who can’t participate in land-based forms of exercise.  The support provided by the water can make exercise possible for people with mobility, joint and/or pain issues.  Swimming is also considered a good sport for asthmatics as the warm moist air rarely provokes attacks.

There are some medical conditions that you should discuss with your doctor before you take up swimming, for example epilepsy or any condition that may cause dizziness or fainting. If you have one of these conditions it is essential you inform your local pool management and the lifeguard before you get in the water.
