Autumn 1972 was the first phase of the Finsbury Leisure Centre, formerly known as St Lukes. The original facilities were one football pitch and three tennis courts, which were also used for netball.
In 1975 the main building, designed by Derek Lovejoy and partners, was opened and indoor recreation could be offered. The sports hall, at 106 feet in length and 20 feet wide, had an interesting feature in the lighting which was designed to eliminate glare by providing natural and artificial light from the roof only. The dividing curtains meant that different activities could take place within this space at the same time including badminton, volleyball, basketball, judo, trampoline, table tennis and golf practice.
Upstairs the bar, kitchen and community room could house a range of functions, events and family activities.
In 1984, the outdoor tennis court was built over to create three squash courts.
Over the years and with the help of a lottery grant, the tennis courts became football pitches with ever improving playing surfaces. The centre became renowned for it’s football provision.
Finsbury is now the biggest five-a-side football league centre in the country.
