About the centre
Bath Sports and Leisure Centre was opened in September 1975 by HRH Princess Anne. The location of the leisure centre was chosen to easily source the natural warm spa water which originally filled the swimming pool. While this feature is now long gone, the plant room still has pipe work leading to the source of what makes Bath both internationally famous and historically important; the hot springs.
The building has shown great adaptability over the years as times have changed. In 1980 a bowls hall and six squash courts were added. In 1994 the 33m pool was reduced to 25m and a teaching pool was converted into a fun pool complete with river ride, flume and spa. In 2001 the Zany Zone soft play area for children was introduced.
In 2004 the centre underwent a £1,000,000 investment that included a stunning new 100 station gym overlooking the pool and sports hall. This was opened by England and Bath rugby hero Mike Catt MBE. The refurbishment also included a new sauna and steam suite, new reception and café and new studios. More recently saw the launch of the Active Zone, an interactive fitness area for young people that utilises all the latest technology to make getting fit fun.
Bath Sports and Leisure Centre is a regional facility and with over 60 exercise classes every week runs the biggest exercise class programme in the south west. It is also home to some very active sports clubs and teams.
