Key Stats

The acclaimed Saturday Night Project® achieved attendance of 4,500 young people aged 13-19 years old during its existence.

At the time of the project, Islington was ranked among the top 10 most deprived boroughs in England, so youth engagement was crucial.

Providing a safe haven for vulnerable young people.

The Saturday Night Project® began as a partnership with Islington Giving and Access to Sport to break down barriers to young people enjoying active lifestyles. The initiative gave 13-19 year olds a place to go on a Saturday night that was safe, supportive and offered opportunities to try activities and sports they may otherwise not have had access to. With high levels of deprivation and poverty in the area, providing value for money and engagement opportunities for both sporty and non-sporty young people was crucial.

Tackling anti-social behaviour, territorial rivalries and other social barriers, the success of the initiative could be seen in reduced crime levels in the area on the Saturday nights of the project. Recruiting volunteers to lead the evenings also opened up opportunities for young people to enter apprenticeships in areas such as leisure, sport, catering and youth work.

We are always looking for partners and sponsors to help us continue our youth engagement work and bring it in to new communities. If you are interested in working with us, please contact [email protected].

Key Facts

Physical inactivity has been identified as a leading risk factor for global mortality and puts enormous pressure on local health care providers.

With the exponential growth in the older population, increasing physical activity in older people has been identified as a key target by the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Active Ageing framework.

Reaching out to a highly valued group in our society.

The Get Together Sessions, run in partnership with Age UK and Islington Giving, brought together older residents from the community in a friendly, social and participative setting. These weekly sessions offered anything from table tennis to hula hooping, and gave isolated members of the community a chance to have a chat, get out and make new friends.

Together with volunteers as young as 16 years old, these inter-generational group sessions created positive change for people’s mental health, confidence, social lives and general wellbeing.

We are always looking for partners and sponsors to help us continue our elderly engagement work and bring it in to new communities. If you are interested in working with us, please contact [email protected].
