Non Swimmers 
Children from 5 years upwards1Development of water confidence without parent or guardian. Travelling in the water with the use of floats or suitable aids.
2Confident in the water without aids. Introduction and development of a range of basic skills. Traveling using a variety of stroke kicking actions without aids.
Beginners 
Children aged from 5 years upwards who are able to swim 5m and/or have passed Level 23Further skills including jumping into the water and submerging. Introduction of correct breathing technique and breaststroke and alternating leg action.
4Introduction of new skills including sculling and retrieving objects from the pool floor and further stroke development
Improvers 
Can swim 10m on both front and back using recognised stroke and has passed Level 4.5New skills including treading water and pushing from the side with correct technique. Further development of front crawl breaststroke and backstroke technique.
6Surface diving, swimming underwater and retrieving objects. Swimming full stroke front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke.
Can swim 25m front crawl or breaststroke and 10m of backstroke and has passed Level 6.7New skills include straddle jump entry into water and forward somersault. Swimming 20m in each of the three main strokes using correct leg technique.
8Skills already learned are further developed with rotation skills being introduced. All main strokes are further developed over a 25m distance with pupils swimming 50m using a preferred stroke.
Advanced 
Can swim 50m of one of the three main strokes and has passed Level 8.9Further development of strokes and skills. Introduction of correct turns to ASA rules.
10Enhanced skills in treading water and completion of a circuit. Swimming three main strokes using appropriate turns. Swimming 150m continuously.
Can swim 50m in two strokes showing efficient technique, and 25m on one other main strokes showing efficient technique and has passed Level 10.11Advanced skills including treading water for 1 minute. Introduction of competitive swimming strokes, land based training and improved turning techniques.
12Advanced competitive skills including racing starts for three main strokes. Advanced stroke development preparing pupils for entry into swimming clubs.
